Perfectionism

Normal perfectionism can be defined as having high achievable expectations and deriving satisfaction from efforts to achieve those expectations.  Neurotic perfectionism, on the other hand, can be defined as having unrealistically high goals and being unable to feel satisfaction from efforts to achieve goals. Characteristics of perfectionists which contribute to underachievement:  

  • procrastination
  • fear of failure
  • workaholism
  • excessive self criticism
  • avoidance of risk taking

What can parents do to help?

  • help your child maintain good health habits
  • model and discuss time management techniques /li>
  • help your child set goals and priorities
