Often called one of the hallmarks of giftedness, asynchronous development refers to the mismatch between a child’s intellectual/cognitive, emotional, or physical development. The higher a child’s IQ, the more prominent the disparity may be. Consider a four year-old who can remember names and facts of dozens of dinosaurs in one moment, and in the next is throwing a classic four year-old tantrum. Because her intellectual capabilities are more akin to a child twice her age, others around her may be inclined to treat her as such. People may be surprised when the child’s behavior reminds them that she is only four.
Here are some links to help you learn more about asynchronous development and how to adjust your expectations and help to engage your child.
